Alela Diane’s sweet, milky voice is the centerpiece of To Be Still, subtlety embellished by bits of banjo, slide guitar and, appropriately, self-sung harmonies. A pleasant addition to the female freak-folk genre, Diane shares whimsical, nature-rich themes with hometown buddy Joanna Newsom, but does so with significantly less quirk.
Alela and Alina’s album sounds as if composed in any key, so long as it was a sharp. Roomy and twangy, they harken back to the "story-telling" times of songs and deliver images of stabbed wives and the rambling road. The ladies’ voices weave around each other for delightful depth.
