Repping Memphis, Tennessee, Al Kapone, Sir Vince and Young AJ took the Austin Music Hall Stage - which was nearly empty - by storm Saturday night. As a photographer I couldn't stand the constant motion of the three MCs. As an audience member, I appreciated the energy and effort put into the performance. Backed by a bassist, guitarist, drummer and DJ, Al Kapone performed a handful of newer tracks, along with some older crunk joints, and a couple of his underground bangers.
Al Kapone has had a problem getting the exposure he deserves his entire career. From a fallout with Def Jam early in the decade to being overshadowed by Three 6 Mafia on the Hustle & Flow soundtrack, Kapone hasn't gotten much recognition outside of Memphis. Likewise Saturday night, the biggest disappointment was that there weren't more people to see his strong performance.
