What else we were talking about that week

I walked in mid-show to the sounds of Nomo's afro-funk jazz fusion jam fest and frankly can't understand why the place wasn't packed, seeing as everyone who subsequently entered got that sudden surprised look upon their face of "oh wow!" and promptly began to move. Nomo is clearly made up of extremely talented musicians, able to jam and flow smoothly from one solo to the next.

Nomo is quite a large ensemble overall. This present incarnation featured at many times two drummers and a percussionist and several members moved between keys, guitar, saxophone and percussion at any given time. At one point saxophonist Elliott Bergman even busted out what I'm pretty sure is a plugged in(electric!) Kalimba. Front and center stood Dan Bennett who exploited the full range of his bari sax and and Justin Walter, who worked so hard blasting his trumpet you could see the veins pulse in his forehead.

My only criticism was the distance between Nomo and the crowd, as the stage placed them quite a ways removed. Fortunately after their "formal" set ended, they moved to the floor with just their horns and an African drum to form a bonus jam circle. I see what our other Melophobe writers were raving about now, such a cool show!
