What else we were talking about that week

The Blow is, to say the least, an interesting musical act. Friday night's show at Brooklyn Vegan's Music Hall of Williamsburg CMJ showcase was part concert, performance art, mixing comical narrative into a fascinating one-woman show. Khaela Maricich began with an a cappella tune, accompanied only by the sound of her finger tapping on the head of the microphone. She followed it up with "Hey Boy," by far The Blow's most popular song, before launching into a five song set based around the whimsical narrative of a fictional record written by The Blow for Lindsay Lohan. Startling, endearing, bizarre, and fascinating, the set was unlike any performance I've seen before.

Khaela broke the fourth wall frequently, giving advice to the lights guy, asking the crowd for permission to restart a song, and sharing sentiments like, "Sometimes when I make the moves on stage, people in the audience look at me like they think they can have me. But they can't have me." She kept her distance, but was quick to indulge a crowd member's request for "Jet Ski Accidents" - the entire set was filled with those sorts of juxtapositions and idiosyncrasies. Maricich closed with "True Affection," which rings with the chorus of "I was out of your league." Perhaps she was unreachable, but she was also damn entertaining.
