What else we were talking about that week

Day Two of Sasquatch! was mostly ‘bout the soul and blues…and this girl couldn’t have been happier for it. With a day that starts with Charles Bradley and ends with The Roots, one might think there couldn’t be much better in between. But the festival proved otherwise, with such greats as Alabama Shakes and Jack White casting out hellacious performances throughout the day.

One band who added to this lineup was a group I didn’t even learn about until after I missed their show – Pickwick is now someone I intend to devote full attention to. Based out of Seattle, these guys sound like they’re about to hit it huge with their groovy soul inflection.

Outside of that box were terrific sets from groups of every kind, even from those I only heard about. This included one from St. Vincent, who apparently threw some serious ‘tude at her guitar tech for not providing enough volume for her instrument, then ripped her way through an awesome show.

Rumor has it Portlandia might not have been as hilariously awesome as folks expected, but I’m sure Carrie Brownstein made up for it in her Wild Flag set the next day. Also proving a downer were The Shins, who inappropriately played a pretty dull set, directly prior to the fantastic Jack White showing. Even “New Slang” was slower than ever, and it just added to the boredom The Shins gave us.

Overall, however, this was definitely the best day of the festival, and introduced me and others to a slew of great new musicians.
