John Vanderslice’s latest offering, White Wilderness, features the Magik*Magik Orchestra as part backing band and part artistic collaborator. The orchestral counterpoint adds a (surprising) looseness and greater musical depth, but the arrangements often bury the poignancy, as Vanderslice seems all too willing to trade out lyrical resonance for polyphony.
