Early on, the Old 97’s foregrounded their country cred at the expense of broader influences that have helped shape their later career. This EP remains an incomplete picture, but a haunting cover of Bowie’s pre-apocalyptic anthem, “Five Years,” and the frenetic wordplay of “For the Girl” hint at the edges.
