A derivative of a derivative makes for some complex mathematics, but in music it’s a formula for simplicity - one that is executed by Turin Brakes to wearying effect. On Outbursts, the duo channels second-raters Coldplay and Black Crowes, watering the whole thing down in the process to folky, insipid mediocrity.
