Emphasizing world beats at the expense of radio pop, Contra displays a more sophisticated side of Vampire Weekend. It's tempting to write this off as a sophomore slump, as it lacks obvious hits, but like Weezer’s Pinkerton, this subtle album will seem stronger in retrospect than it does upon release.
