Free Energy

Spin magazine is bringing Free Energy and Foxy Shazam to the Doug Fir stage on Nov. 10, and it’s set to taste a lot like a summer cocktail in 1977.

Free Energy’s sunny guitar rock feels like renovated AM radio from decades ago, and their joyful and dancey style makes ya just wanna jump up and kiss somebody. Two members of the group, singer Paul Sprangers and guitarist Scott Wells, are shaking free of their work with Hockey Night, a band who definitely took more of a Pavement-like approach with their rock sound. Free Energy never get overly cheery or playful in the music they create, but design a solid blast of positive, good-feelin’ vibes, instead.

The Phildadelphia quintet worked with LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy to release the 2010 hit debut Stuck On Nothing, an album full of poppy and carefree sounds. Tracks like “Hope Child” are hard to let go of, as they evoke a revamped brand of fun and concise glam that is definitely of today.

The band’s set will be their second in Portland, OR this fall, their first being a part of September’s Musicfest NW, with Japandroids, JEFF the Brotherhood and Cheap Girls. melophobe will be there to capture the yummy essence of the night, and you should be, too! Get your tickets at www.dougfirlounge.com, or grab them at the door, the night of the show.
