There's been a lot of tabloid buzz surrounding the upcoming box office release "Blue Valentine," which features Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams working through a failing marriage. There was the fuss about the movie being rated NC-17, and how they fought to make it R, and then they were fighting to explain the integrity of the sex scenes . . . blah, blah, same old, same old.
What sources haven't been telling you is that before this movie was even casted, the director wanted Grizzly Bear to soundtrack the film. After some delays and conflicts of schedule, an original score was pushed back and the band offered several tracks from Veckatimest and Friend to soundtrack the film instead. Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen spoke with New York Daily News on their approval of the director's approach with their music:
"I thought it was very intense," a somewhat surprised Rossen says of the music used throughout the film. "I really like that he restricted the music in two segments: past and present. The segments from present day were very stark, and the segments from the past were romanticized, and it kind of worked very well to have the music this way."
What I want to know is how they used Grizzly Bear to backdrop the sexy parts. Anyone else having problems envisioning that? Either way, hear "Dory" above and snag below, which is one of the tracks being used in the film.
But before you get carried away with that, Rossen also had a word about a fourth album being in the works:
"It's slowly happening now," says Rossen. "We'll probably get into it, I hope, early next year, but the thing is we don't ever really like to put too much time restrictions on what we do because we just want to make sure it's as good as it can be."
Well, it's a start.
