I'm sure you're starting to see a pattern. I like Kid Cudi, I like Kanye, basically I like everybody on the G.O.O.D. music label and I follow their moves so I can beam them to you. And if you feel like getting beamed up, you should definitely take some time, head over to Cudi's myspace page and take a listen to his new album, Man On The Moon: The End of Day because it is good. Here's a warning though, it is an ALBUM, not a bunch of singles. Which to me was shocking. Not because I need that in my life or to pay attention, but rather that most artists don't/won't do that on a DEBUT album.
Typically, debut albums are front loaded with singles, only to be spotty after that, as if they're hoping that the hits will carry them. But not this record. While it does have a beefed up/more polished version of his underground hit "Day 'N' Nite" and the omnipresent "Make Her Say," to me, that's where the obvious singles stop. That's not to say there aren't good songs on the record, there are tons, but a lot of them feel like they lean more towards the deep cut end of the spectrum or that they ask more of the listener than just bobbing your head to a hook. Which means that this new cat, released a record that would usually be a second or third album in an artist's career, as his first album! That is cool! And what it says about Cudi is that he's going to go for the sound he wants, picking up the fans who like him for him along the way and that he is probably going to be courting the next level, rather than the old way. That's great for us, as music fans, as well as anybody tired of the staleness or lack of originality that the majority of modern hip hop is heaping on us.
Bravo.
