I got tricked into all this originally, when I somehow scored a friend’s feature film while trying to convince him I had no idea what I was doing. That was back in Athens where I first starting recording bands, giving people the impression I was an engineer simply because I’d spent my college tuition on recording equipment. From there I got into producing other people’s songs, though I had never really written one of my own. Nobody ever taught me how to play music and for some reason I never asked. I started moving around to a lot of places and kept falling into more movie score situations, but after a while I simply never let the fact that I didn’t know what I was doing get in the way of just doing it anyway. - Ben Lovett
Well regardless of how he got here, Ben Lovett has a sound that you'd want to have stick around. From looming as a nomadic background composer to thrusting himself passionately into songwriting, Lovett has an intense magnetism in his voice that complements the richly developed music emerging from his self-released album, Highway Collection. Enjoy him above with "Heartattack," which demonstrates some of his more raw and powerful elements.
Also, thanks to his film connections I'm assuming, Lovett has acquired a menagerie of gorgeously executed music videos that all carry a similar schematic: monochromatic color schemes with a little bit of steampunk. They are all fascinating to watch and you can see "Eye of the Storm" and "Heartattack" below, but first check out his amazing performance parade from SXSW 2011:
