D'Angelo

Present # 4 is a D'Angelo concert from the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000. And while there is always a reason to post a great D'Angelo concert, I had ulterior motives in that I wanted to honor another one of my 'best of the decade' albums, Voodoo. Now a little context. At this stage of the game (we are back in 2000 now), the critics were raving about D'Angelo and his remarkable record. Women were going gaga over the "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" video and he was bringing down the house all over TV. So he did what anyone would do...he took Voodoo out for a victory lap.

The concert I have chosen as an audio document of the tour has all the right ingredients for neo-soul: two shakes funky, a pinch of hip-hop, and a dollop of soul. Not to mention, it has great background singers (including Anthony Hamilton before he went solo) and a fantastic horn section. This tour was his chance to open up the songs that lived in that record and show every influence that inspired it. So, Prince, James Brown, and every great soul singer from the last 40 years...this one went out to you. Let me know if you like it and if you want more presents to follow.
