Tanya Morgan, the rap collective out of the fictional town of Brooklynati, is bringing its independent spirit and hip hop stylings to the left coast. The trio, who made our Top 10 Best Hip-Hop Albums/Mixtapes of 2009 list with their stellar Brooklynati, recently stormed through New York, where we caught their set at the Mercury Lounge. Of that show, Melophobe's Chris Barth wrote: "Tanya Morgan has a unique style that recalls old-school rap, with focus on clear lyrics and verses rather than flashy hooks. The trio met via the okayplayer message boards, a genesis that helps explain their sound. The hooks are there, but the strength of the group lies in their laid-back flows that emphasize content. 'I used to just rap with a lot of punchlines,' chattered Von Pea on the smooth 'On Our Way.' 'Doubled my meaning, now I’m mean, and you’ll adjust fine.'"
The group plays at Portland's Someday Lounge on August 26th, along with Blu and J*Davey, the fifth stop on an 8-stint trek through the West. They'll hit Seattle on Saturday, August 28th, before wrapping up (for now) in Sacramento. Catch them live, these kids are fresh!
