Fifty-word reviews
Dylan’s latest may not match the late-career achievement that was 2001’s Love & Theft, but it somehow combines that album’s rambunctious tone with Nashville Skyline’s laid-backed vibe, Planet Waves’s rushed energy, and Desire’s obliviousness to contemporary trends. In short, a minor triumph to be enjoyed on its own terms.
It’s been over forty years since his debut, and Dylan's craggy, haggard voice sounds here like a ghost of Christmas past. Despite the choir that props him up, he’s as unsettling singing “O’ Little Town of Bethlehem” as he must have been to the folkies at Royal Albert Hall. Nicklaus!
