I'll be honest, I'd never really listened to Best Coast that much prior to catching them twice at SXSW. Their song, "When I'm With You," is catchy and enjoyable, but that's about as deep into their catalog as I had ever gotten. At Fader Fort on Thursday of SXSW, they didn't do a ton to change my mind. Don't get me wrong, it was a totally fine set - there was nothing particularly bad about it, and the aforementioned track was indeed a highlight. But the three piece seemed to bounce around a bit in the large tent, spaced entirely too far apart from each other to give the impression that they functioned as a cohesive unit. Instead, it seemed almost as if three distinct players were laying down tracks simultaneously, a sort of detachment that shows through in their music. It was inoffensive, but seemed to me a bit like busywork.
