What else we were talking about that week

There are some shows that feel as if the performers on stage are more concerned with their antics and hijinks than with the music they are producing. Then there are those blissful shows where the performers are so absorbed by their instruments that they seem to forget all about the audience. Collections of Colonies of Bees' set at Flamingo Cantina fell into the latter category, a wonderful instrumental session that really felt like creation rather than recitation. Arranged in a slightly inward-facing circle on stage, Collections of Colonies of Bees - perhaps best known for joining Bon Iver's Justin Vernon for last year's Volcano Choir project - crafted impeccably cohesive post rock jams. It was neither flashy nor pretentious; in place of showmanship, audience members were treated to an exquisite concert from musicians who really care about their craft.
