Demolished Thoughts - a supergroup made up of Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, Dinosaur Jr. songwriter J Mascis, Sonic Youth producer Don Fleming, and partyboy extraordinaire Andrew W.K. – took all possible expectations and shredded them on stage at MOG’s Saturday showcase at Mohawk. Despite the absence of Mr. WK (he was replaced by Fucked Up bassist Jonah Falco) the band soldiered on, playing a fiery set of raucous punk covers. It wasn’t the most pleasant musical performance – the songs were brash, the volume was loud, and Moore read the lyrics off of a stapled packet of paper. But in many ways, it was one of the most enjoyable sets I saw all week.
“I HATE KIDS” shouted Moore to start off the fourth song of the set; “I HATE SPORTS” was the fifth song. Moore introduced the next two songs simply as “Song Number Six” and “Song Number Seven,” going on to thank the audience for sticking around. It was part punk rock, part performance art/comedy, and the mix was nearly perfect. You got the feeling that if you stopped by Thurston Moore’s garage on a random weekend, you might hear him fooling around, playing these tunes with his friends. For a daytime show from a handful of luminaries, I don’t think you could ask for much more.
