Home Slice Pizza had two stages set up when we first stumbled into the back yard on South Congress that Saturday morning. Playing on the "house stage," Gentleman Reg had the job of being something between the house band and the interstitial music-makers, responsible for keeping the party going while the main stage bands set up and tore down. Whatever their job was—whether to have their own little featurettes or to merely be filler—they performed admirably, waking us up gently but with solid musicality and performance.
Gentleman Reg were enjoyable, certainly, though not particularly memorable. For first thing on a Saturday morning, this wasn't a bad thing. Anything more in-our-faces, anything louder and more aggressive, may well have been completely off-putting. And I wouldn't be surprised if they became more compelling and memorable throughout the day, or at their evening set at Beauty Bar. I just didn't end up sticking around for more than two tweener sets to find out for sure....
