Of all of the sets I saw at Bonnaroo, this one just may have been the most bizarre. Frontman James Murphy had a slight verbal spar with fans throwing glowsticks at him from the crowd. A naked man on PCP tried to rush the stage and was stopped only by a diving Wayne Coyne (lead singer of Flaming Lips). LCD Soundsystem talked about "being at work" and eschewed an encore at the end of the show. It was, without a doubt, a strange hour to spend in the company of wacky music.
That being said, it was also one of the best sets. Murphy and co. do a great job of creating phenomenal jams - they take the energy found on LCD Soundsystem records and make it contagious. A double-time romp through "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" was the highlight of a set that contained hits, new and old. "Pow Pow" and "Dance Yrself Clean," from the group's latest This Is Happening, were warmly received, but the old stuff still got the biggest ovations. "Us vs. Them," "All My Friends," and "Losing My Edge" all brought the house down. "If this is a weird day," said Murphy, "it's a good weird day." A good and weird set on a good and weird day, indeed.
