What else we were talking about that week

A Big Freedia concert is a neutral zone where what makes you different will never be held against you. It doesn't matter if you are gay or straight, rich or poor, a man or woman, glamorous or low-key. What is important at a Freedia show is how hard you shake your booty. That's it. And for that you will be judged. Don't shake it and you may get called out. Shake it well and you may be asked to participate in a "booty battle." For those that don't know what a booty battle is, stop for a moment and think. It's exactly what your brain is telling you it is: two people bending over chairs and trying to shake it harder, faster and stronger than the person next to them. These displays are the type of thing that raises quite a rumpus, even when the booties in combat are less than picture perfect. Like I said, your differences will not be held against you.

It is this "come one, come all" spirit that has makes a Freedia show something people are genuinely excited to attend. To go is to experience a rare situation full of boundless exuberance and successful attempts to unlock the uninhibited self. Freedia encourages this by barking orders at the sweaty masses. Everything is a command. Everything is about booty. It almost makes you wonder if Freedia learned to overcome stage fright by imagining her audience as a collection of asses. Her music also encourages this as it is basically one pumping bass line after another. Deep? No. Fun. Yes. Can you unsee some of the things that are presented before you at one of her shows? Probably not. But in the spirit of Freedia, it's best not to judge. I just left it at this: there is a reason why some shows start at 1 in the morning.
