Titus Andronicus are no strangers to oddly effusive melophobian praise – in describing their 2008 performance at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club, Ari Sommer wrote, “Once they get singing and playing, it’s exactly the kind of drunken diabolical orgy with the visigoth queen we’ve all always dreamed of. Though in a pleasant way. The sound is antagonistic, probably intentionally difficult to handle at times, but has the power and recklessness to be fun. Riotous fun. Just not wholesome fun, certainly.”
Having seen their ardor in the spacious Paradise, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see them in the cozy confines of Great Scott. Bearded and strung (out?), they put everything on the line bringing tunes from their excellent new record, The Monitor, to a snug stage that seemed to barely hold them. Luckily, Michael Spencer was there with his camera to catch it.
