Aside from a collection of goodies through Matador Records' Buy Early Get Now program, Fucked Up have been popping out singles over the past couple months leading up to the release of their "massive rock opera," David Comes To Life, on June 7. Today saw the debut of the last in a set of four singles, including "The Other Shoe," "A Little Death," "Ship of Fools" and "Queen of Hearts."
The album is publicized as a play set to a rock opera, or vice versa, so when the latest single, "Queen of Hearts," came out today the band offered some insight into the storyline and musical process on this track as well as the album as a whole:
“You may notice from the lyrics posted a while ago on davidcomestolife.com that this song describes a happy place – David and Veronica meet and fall in love before things start to go pear shaped. What about the music, you ask? Well we wrote most of this song in 2004 or 2005 and made up the chorus and the bridge over the summer. That intro riff has been rattling around inside my head since we released Dance of Death. There’s a few other tracks in this collection that are as old, kind of crazy. We were listening to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins at the time, so maybe you can hear a bit of a resemblance.”
