What else we were talking about that week

For years I’ve struggled to understand why Bon Iver is so acclaimed, but I’ve finally come to terms with the fact his music is just not for me. Going into his set this night, however, I decided to keep a completely open mind. Although it was hilariously ironic to hear several people around me say, “I’m only sticking around until he does "Skinny Love," then I'm leaving.”

As the show began, it truly did sound beautiful as the band’s violin echoed throughout The Gorge. There was a strong backup band playing behind lead Justin Vernon, who looked dapper in his suit, and even gave us a taste of his vocals without Auto-Tune…proving his songs would be so much better if he didn’t use it! Maybe that’s my general dislike of the machine, but still…

After playing a string of hits from Bon Iver, Vernon stopped and announced he was awed by the venue. “There’s just so much to take in,” he said. It didn’t affect his delivery of a quality performance, however, and despite my dislike of his tunes, I have to say Bon Iver performed an impressive show. Especially when he finally gave the crowd “Skinny Love,” of which he reworked slightly to have more melody variation than its original. Maybe someday my mind will get changed on this guy and his band, but ‘til then: show us more of what your real vocals can do!
