After stumbling fortuitously upon a hip hop showcase at Emo’s late on Friday night, I was excited to see the Cool Kids take the stage. The Chicago rappers prowled the stage with a confident snarl supported by grimy beats and smooth flows. Mikey and Chuck Inglish traded verses over well known tracks. Although there were snippets of new material from the duo, the set largely relied on older hits.
Want to learn how to groove at a Cool Kids show? Put your arms out, bent at the elbow, so that your biceps are parallel to the ground and your forearms are at a vertical, 90 degrees from your upper arm. Now lean back and slowly pump your arms while listening to baller indie hip hop. Boom. You’re at a Cool Kids show. And it rocks.
