Tokyo Police Club are great at what they do. That’s not saying I like their music that much, but I definitely admire how perfect it is for, say, high schoolers. Authority-challenging guitar lines and strong bass chugs are this band's MO and they complement these leanings with great songwriting. A name like that hearkens too much back to the days of early emo however, and I feel that shoots them in the foot. I wish there was a way for them to safely change the name, mid-career, so they’d be able to grow as a band and not have to drag that childish tag along with them.
At least their set was full of upbeat and quirky rhythms, and featured a break that brought a fan to the stage, so he could propose to his girlfriend. Thankfully she said yes, and it was one of the most endearingly sweet moments of the weekend.
