It’s true the Banana Shack is a hit-or-miss kind of stage at Sasquatch! Some spectacular bands get chosen to play there each year, but that generally means the place will be crammed to the max with sweaty, hyper, “oblivious-to-others” fans. This is also the tent where lesser-known acts can prove themselves, however, and that’s why it can be exciting to wander into the Banana and discover something truly new and awesome.
As for the electro-ambient wizard Tycho, it’s also a place for fans to slip out of reality and dance mindlessly to the hypnotic grooves of his music. Which was exactly what we happened upon as we entered the tent Sunday afternoon. It was ironic that while he now tours with a drummer and bassist, his music was sounding even more spacey and transcendental than ever. And it wasn’t coming across that well – it felt more like soothing, self-help music than that of the solid stuff Tycho’s known for.
Thankfully the grooves eventually picked up tempo a bit, and made for a more a danceable set, but the damage had already been done. We left soon after to avoid the deadening Tycho's tracks were doing to our desire to be pumped up for the rest of the night.
