I've been meaning to catch local New Yorkers Savoir Adore for some time now, but have missed them for various reasons. Luckily, I got to the Neon Gold/Chess Club Friday CMJ showcase at Public Assembly in time to see them drop their brand of indie rock on a rapt crowd. The mix of male and female vocals could tempt you to put this band in the cutesy box that holds bands like Jenny and Johnny, She and Him, or Rilo Kiley. Don't do it. Savoir Adore ripped through enough blistering guitar solos - including one particularly mind-bending ascension at the pinnacle of the set - to stomp that idea right out. Deidre Muro added blissed-out synths on a MemoryMoog as Paul Hammer twiddled knobs, and Savoir Adore managed to make the middle of the day feel psychedelic again.
