One thing is clear abundantly from Toro y Moi's live show that hadn't always been from his recorded history: this music is dance music. While Chaz Bundick and co.'s rise to chillwave iconhood was necessarily tied to the gauzy, swaying character associated with that genre, their present live incarnation feels a lot different. As with their recent album "Underneath the Pine" and Bundick's February mix for FACT magazine, the band's live show is much more funk and soul-inflected. An occasional layered, hazy sound makes an appearance, but as a motif within a more traditional four-piece instrumental sensibility, rather than the mainstay of the solo-with-box-of-buttons-and-switches aesthetic.
