There's not much you need to know about Weezer's live set. Rivers Cuomo acts in the perfect balance between how old he really is and how old he wants to be. His outfit: how old he is. His stage antics: how old he wants to be.
I was anticipating a fun show, never having been the biggest Weezer fan. Sure, I loved the Blue Album, and sure I LOVED Pinkerton, but I was expecting a slew of new songs, and maybe "Buddy Holly" if I was lucky. Turns out, I was very lucky. "Looks like we've got some old school fans in the crowd," said Cuomo. "We're gonna play some Pinkerton!"
Weezer played a good half of Pinkerton, and a good majority of the Blue Album, complete with great guitar solos, perfect vocals, and an overwhelming sense that the band still has fun with all their music. The encore, however, was the biggest surprise.
"We're gonna play a song from one of our favorite bands!" A cover, cool, what could it be? Oh, it's "Paranoid Android." That's weird. Are they allowed to do that? Turns out, they were allowed to do that. The cover was phenomenal, hitting the right notes from Yorke's vocals to the guitar solo at the end.
Thanks for bringing me back to middle school, Weezer. I actually really enjoyed it.
