How To Dress Well's set at Pitchfork's #Offline Festival was the second strangest of the week, bested only by The Blow's odd performance at BrooklynVegan's CMJ showcase. How To Dress Well is already a bit of a bizarre character; riding the L-train and setting eyes on his mustachioed hipster frame, you would never anticipate him producing a soulful R&B that tugs on your heartstrings. It does, though, whether you want it to or not. After turning off nearly all of the lights in Brooklyn Bowl, he put on a karaoke set that was at once detached and highly personal. He often turned his back on the crowd, but was effusive in his thanks and praise between tunes. I'm not convinced that I believe in the staying power of How To Dress Well; I am convinced, however, that he believes in himself.
